Make Green the New Black

The Rise of Sustainability
by Maurane Vuillaume

We hear it everywhere; fashion is one of the most polluting industries. And my little moral voice makes me feel guilty about buying that many clothes, which I may only wear once.
Luckily, some designers and more accessible brands are helping us to have a clear conscience- like Stella McCartney.
The vegetarian designer is one of the first to make sustainability a trend. She has strong ethical beliefs and makes it known.  She refuses to use fur in her designs and puts the respect of the environment as a priority. But do not dare tell her that she sacrifices her design to fit with sustainability- fashion stays her priority. She does not adapt fashion to the environment, her brand adapts materials to suit her designs.
Indeed, the sustainable brand tries to find new materials or make the ones already existing less polluting and more eco-friendly. Take the use of viscose for example. Viscose, a main component of clothes, is made from trees so its production can cause deforestation. However, Stella McCartney did not cut all production with viscose. Instead they found a way to make it sustainable.  As shown in a recently released video they managed to create a sustainable viscose, coming only from a sustainable forest in Sweden.

And that makes us happy, I mean... look at these bags!

As you well know it’s that time of year again…. the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show.
This year the show was set in Paris for the first time.

On Sunday evening the angels were flown from New York to Paris in style in a private jet.
The angels wore a uniform of pink tshirts with ‘Victoria’s Secret Paris 2016’ emblazoned on the chest paired with jeans and black boots as well as a mini French flag and Eiffel Tower models.

All the models flew in the private jet minus Gigi Hadid who flew after separately. Gigi’s sister Bella made her Victoria’s Secret debut this year making them the first ever siblings to walk to VS catwalk. Alongside Bella, Irina Shayk also made her Victoria’s Secret debut, who after announced she’s pregnant.

You may have noticed that two key angels were missing this year – Candice Swanepoel and Behati Prinsloo, both of which due to having recently become new mothers.

However the 51 other Angels all arrived in Paris safely and had a photo call at the Grand Palais, all of which had another uniform of black tank tops emblazoned with ‘Victoria’s Secret Paris 2016’ paired with black bomber jackets, skinny white jeans and black heels.

The day before the show a few of the Angels went ight seeing and posed for photos in front of Paris’ most iconic landmark.

Six Angels; Lily Aldridge, Adrianna Lima, Jasmine Tookes, Josephine Skriver, Alessandra Ambrosio and Elsa Hosk all posed in front of the Eiffel Tower in matching uniform of white tshirts emblazoned with ‘Victoria Secret Fashion Show Paris 2016’ in black, black jackets, black jeans and black boots.

It’s officially show day!

Set in the Grand Palais, a huge glass construct located between some of Paris’ most iconic landmarks; the Seine and the Champs Elysee, the 51 angels walked the runaway.

Hair and make up backstage took 5 hours and the idea was ‘natural beauty.’ Stylist Sarah Potempa explained ‘we want to embrace everyone’s natural beauty. We’re giving a carefree approach to the length and type of curl…we’re not gonna put a wig or extensions on their head. We’re gonna embrace it. There are 51 women and we’re gonna make them feel their most beautiful.’

The show was split into six themed segments; Road Ahead, Mountain Romance, Pink Nation, Secret Angel, Dark Angel and Bright Night Angel.

Lady Gaga, The Weeknd and Bruno Mars all performed at the show.  Overall the show had 68 runaway looks.
